PTA Profile: Aimee Schultz Excited About Third Year Helping Cranberry Station Elementary

Parent-teacher organizations and associations organize fund raisers, events and offer hands-on support essential to a good school year.

Aimee Schultz joined the PTA in the 2009 - 2010 school year when her first child started kindergarten. This year, her eldest is in second grade and her youngest is now in kindergarten.

Schultz joined so she could play a bigger role in her children’s education.  She is responsible for scheduling and running meetings, as well as steering the PTA from month to month.  In the summer, Schultz writes a welcome back letter, organizes and documents the tasks of different committees and researches fund raising activities.

Patch asked Schultz about her role as the PTA president.

Patch:  What are some of your biggest challenges in this role?

Schultz: Raising funds is a challenge because of the economy.  This year we are running multiple fund raising activities in hopes of providing something for everyone.  Not everyone wants or needs cookie dough and gift wrap - which are good fundraisers, but might not be appealing or affordable to all.  That said, our primary objective is to provide our schools with funds, programs, resources and services that will enrich and maximize the education of every child. Our PTA provides the funds used to purchase Student Agendas, Quick Word Books, Book Fair Coupons, prizes for Project A.C.E.S., Helping Hands Closet –(extra classroom supplies), funds for field trips, Birthday Books for every student, and Play Day refreshments, just to name a few. We fund school assemblies, cultural programs, and author readings. We hope to host a monthly family event such as craft night and an ice cream social.

Patch: What are some of your happiest moments/biggest accomplishment as PTA President?

Schultz: I am extremely happy about the number of members who have joined so far this year.  We held our first meeting on Sept. 6 and the attendance was great, but even better was the interaction of parents bringing ideas to the meeting…not just sharing ideas, but volunteering to act on them. That is BEAUTIFUL!

Patch: What do you enjoy about being involved with the PTA?

Schultz: The PTA provides opportunities to meet and to talk with other parents who have the same worries that I do. I can share concerns and accomplishments with other parents, and together provide a voice for our children, and those children who may not have representation. Being part of PTA results in parental support and makes school involvement easier.  I meet teachers and staff that I may not have had an opportunity to interact with otherwise.  Ultimately, I have the opportunity to serve, to volunteer, and to contribute to the welfare of all children, because children represent our future.
