West Middle Competing in Nationwide Recycle-Bowl, $2,500 Grand Prize

West Middle is competing in the first ever nationwide Recycle-Bowl competition to promote recycling within the community and a chance for a $2,500 grand prize.

Sponsored by Nestlé Waters, the Recycle-Bowl is the first competition of its kind that challenges schools across the country to collect as many recyclable materials as they can over a four week period.

The competition began on Oct. 17 and runs through Nov. 12.

At the end of the four‐week competition, the Maryland school that collects the most recyclables per capita will win $1,000. A national champion will then be chosen from among the statewide winners to receive a grand prize of $2,500.

To promote the competition, West Middle has designed a few fun challenges within the school.  There is a competition between the grade‐levels to see which grade can collect the most recyclable materials.  The grade that recycles the most will be awarded extra recess time.

Extra incentive and fun is also added with a magazine drive competition between the homerooms.  The homeroom that stacks the tallest magazine tower will earn a donut breakfast.

On November 5th, West Middle School will also host a community paper drive.  Anyone in the community willing to help with this challenge may drop off their collected papers at the school Saturday, Nov. 5 anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.  West Middle School is located at 60 Monroe St.

Dawn Voyce, Co-President of the PTO explains that West Middle has always been a school that recycles and teaches the importance of doing so.  According to the Paper Retriever Recycling link on the West Middle website, the school has been recycling about 300 pounds of paper per month even before the current drive.

Voyce and the students and teachers of West Middle appreciate your help in collecting papers for this drive and your support in encouraging recycling within the community.
