Winters Mill Boys Capture County Track Title

The Winters Mill boys track team surprised the county by grabbing the county title Wednesday at Manchester Valley.

The Falcons compiled 126 points to Century’s 103.

Winters Mill’s Ryan Spangler broke the record in the 1600 run with a time of 4:19. The old record was set in 1986 by Westminster’s Mark Gilmore at 4:24.20.

It was only the second time Spangler had run the distance this spring. Asked if he was going for the record, he said, ``That was the goal. It was only the second time I run the 1600.’’

The featured head-to-head battle of Century’s Maura Linde and Winters Mill’s Hannah Oneda saw both runners raise to the occasion. They traded the lead for the first three laps of the 1600 meter run before Linde pulled away on the final lap.

Linde broke a 19-year record with a time of 5:01.62.

Oneda came back to take the 3200 meter run over Linde, also in a county record of 11:10.59. The record she broke was also 19 years old.
