Winters Mill Track Team Makes Strong Showing at State Meet

In the girls meet, the Falcons are looking up at county foe Liberty, who lead the girls meet after five events with 24 points. Winters Mill has 16 points.

Junior Hannah Oneda had a hand in the Falcon points. She ran away with the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:13.65, which was 33 seconds ahead of second place. She also ran a leg on the 4X800 meter relay which finished fourth.

Other members of the relay were Nicole Rutherford, Jill Benko and Erica Diffendal.

Asked about the heat, Oneda said "I knew I had to get used to the heat. Drink tons of water the past few days and all day today. That probably helped."

Oneda will run in the 800 and 1600 meter runs Saturday. She is seeded second in the 1600.

The started the meet by capturing the first event on the track. The 4X800 relay was in second when senior Ryan Spangler took the baton for the last leg. He caught the Westside runner and then ran away to a seven second victory. He joined with juniors Alex Warfield, Will Weisgerber and Reilly Cox for a time of 8:03.28.

After finishing second twice in the past, Winters Mill took first this time around.

"We are pretty happy with our time. We really wanted to break eight (minutes) today. This heat is killer,’’ said Spangler.

The Falcons gained their other points in the 3200 meter run as Zach Hopkins was fourth and Weston Carvalho was sixth.

Spangler will step on the track twice Saturday in the 800 and 1600 meter runs. He is the top seed in the 1600.

The state track meet resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. at Morgan State.
