Maryland-National
Capital Park Police holds youth basketball tournament.
Mid-County Community
Recreation Center, 2004 Queensguard Road, Silver Spring, MD 20906
Looking for something to do while school is closed on January 22nd? The Maryland-National Capital Park Police will be holding its 11th Annual Keith Joseph Basketball Tournament on January 22, 2013, at the Mid-County Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. This all-day event brings together youths from several community centers and police officers for a day of fun, food and competition. We are honored to have former WNBA player Sonia Chase join us this year to referee the championship game, take pictures, and give autographs!
Thanks to generous donations of local merchants, lunch is provided to all kids who participate and the winning team members receive trophies. This year’s tournament will include teams from the following community centers: Bauer Drive, East County, Germantown, Mid-County, Praisner, Takoma Park, Upper County, and Wheaton.
Park Police Officer Keith Joseph held the first basketball tournament in 2000. It was his dream to have an annual tournament to provide a fun, competitive environment
for Montgomery County youth. Unfortunately, Officer Joseph passed away shortly after the first tournament; and the tournament has been held annually since 2003 in his memory, growing and gaining in popularity.

Come out and cheer on the kids as they battle it out for first place. “This is a great activity for Montgomery County youth,” said Chief Antonio DeVaul, “and I am thrilled that Sonia Chase will be joining us.” Games will start at 10:00 a.m. and go until the tournament ends, usually around 4:00 p.m. For more information, please contact Officer Sabrina Pirtle at Sabrina.Pirtle@MNCParkPolice.org.
