Bicyclist Killed In Collision With Car In Wheaton

A bicyclist, who wasn't wearing a helmet, died after getting hit by a car in Wheaton Wednesday evening, police said.

WHEATON, MD — A bicyclist has died after getting hit by a car in Wheaton Wednesday evening. Shortly before 6:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a bicycle-involved collision at the intersection of Randolph Road and Goodhill Road.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the bicyclist was traveling westbound on Randolph Road. A 2019 BMW M240i was also heading that way.

Officials said the 47-year-old man, who was not wearing a helmet, then crossed the westbound lanes of Randolph Road in a southwest direction, colliding with the BMW. The bicyclist died from his injuries at the scene. Police did not immediately release the identity of the victim.

The driver of the BMW is Yale Abraham Tankus, 57, of Silver Spring, according to authorities. Tankus was not injured in the crash.

Detectives from the county's Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating the fatal collision. Anyone with information is asked to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
