Pedestrian Badly Hurt In Collision With Montgomery Co. Police Car

A pedestrian was seriously hurt after getting hit by a Montgomery County police car in Wheaton Thursday night.

WHEATON, MD — A Wheaton man who was hit by a Montgomery County police car Thursday night is expected to survive, officials said. Montgomery County police identified the pedestrian as 21-year-old Ronald De Jesus Ramirez Ramos and said he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The incident comes several weeks after a cyclist was hit by a police car in Bethesda.

Around 9:27 p.m. on Thursday, Officer Fritz Calderon, was traveling in a marked police cruiser near the intersection of Georgia and Blueridge avenues when he hit Ramos, according to authorities. Calderon, who was driving a 2016 Ford Taurus, was not injured during the collision.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Ramos was not in a crosswalk when he was struck by the police cruiser. The officer provided immediate life-saving aid to Ramos while they waited for first responders to arrive, officials said.

An investigation by authorities is underway. Police ask anyone with information to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
