Man Dead After Officer-Involved Shooting In Central MA

State police are investigating after the incident in Westminster on Monday.

WESTMINSTER, MA — Massachusetts State Police are investigating after an officer-involved shooting in Central Massachusetts, according to the Worcester District Attorney's office.

A man has died after officers responded to a residence on South Ashburnham Road in Westminster to serve an arrest warrant on a 22-year-old resident at around 4:45 p.m. on Monday, the DA said.

When making contact with the individual inside the home, the DA said he held a large knife and moved toward the officers. That was when Westminster officers discharged department-issued firearms, striking the individual.

Officers immediately rendered medical aid to the injured man, according to the DA. He was taken to a local hospital and transferred to a Worcester-area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Westminster police officers were not hurt during the incident, and it appeared to be isolated. There is no threat to the ongoing community, accoridng to the DA.

The officers involved were placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol pending the outcome of the investigation, the DA said.

The incident now remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and the Westminster Police Department.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect who died.
