BOSTON, MA — Federal prosecutors have charged three men in the 2018 beating death of Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger — including one Massachusetts-born man who was a killer for a New York City mob family.

Prosecutors on Thursday charged Fotios "Freddy" Geas, 55, Paul "Pauly" DeCologero, 48, and Sean McKinnon, 36, with conspiracy to commit first degree murder.

Federal officials say Geas — a former hitman for the Genovese crime family born in Springfield — and DeCologero were the ones who actually beat Bulger to death in a West Virginia prison. Both are still incarcerated in the federal system, but McKinnon was out on supervised release when the charges were announced Thursday. He was arrested in Florida.

Bulger was 89 when he was beaten to death. He fled Massachusetts in 1994 after he learned of a federal probe into his criminal organization. The FBI and U.S. Marshals arrested him in 2011 at an apartment in Santa Monica, Calif., and he was later sentenced to life in federal prison for murder.
