Heavy Rain Returns To MA: How Will Areas Flooded Last Week Fare?

While most of the region will get a good drenching Wednesday night, rain totals and wind should fall short of last week's damaging levels.

MASSACHUSETTS — After a mild and mostly clear holiday weekend that made for favorable travel conditions, widespread rain will return to Massachusetts on Wednesday night.

The good news for many areas that sustained flooding and high-wind damage during the last two major storms is that this one should not pack the punch of the ones that roared through the region the past two weeks.

After another unseasonably warm and cloudy day on Tuesday, the rain will return Wednesday night after 8 p.m. and could be heavy at times overnight. The National Weather Service said totals should be between a half inch of rain and an inch from Wednesday night into Thursday.

The heaviest rain is expected to be early in the morning with showers lingering throughout another relatively mild Thursday as temperatures once again approach 50 degrees.

Fog will also be a concern on Wednesday night. While it should not be as severe as the dense fog warnings of Christmas night and early Tuesday morning, those traveling overnight should be aware of patchy stretches with low visibility.

Once the rain moves out on Thursday, it is looking like a calmer and colder stretch through the next holiday weekend with high temperatures near 40 degrees each day, occasional showers on Friday, and a limited chance of significant precipitation through New Year's Day.
