MA Man, 77, Seriously Injured In Mt. Garfield Fall

The New Hampshire National Guard used a helicopter to transport the North Shore resident to a hospital.

SALISBURY, MA — A 77-year-old North Shore man was seriously injured this week after a fall on Mt. Garfield in New Hampshire, according to officials.

The Salisbury resident was hiking with his niece along the Garfield Ridge Trail in Franconia when he tripped, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.

"The hiker sustained significant injuries due to the fall, making him unable to move," the agency said.

A New Hampshire National Guard helicopter flew to the trail to transport the man to Dartmouth Health in Lebanon. The rescue took about three hours.

New Hampshire officials lauded the two hikers, however, because they were prepared for such an emergency.

"They carried the proper gear to keep them warm and dry until rescue help could arrive. Having the right equipment and gear could save your life," the agency said.
