Retailers That Closed In MA In 2024 - And What To Expect In 2025
Closures of brick-and-mortar stores increased in Massachusetts this year. Will that trend continue in 2025?
MASSACHUSETTS — The list of big national retailers shutting down locations across the country includes household names from Macy's to Walgreens to Stop & Shop. While some are trimming locations as part of the normal course of business, others are facing bankruptcy or moving to a digital-focused business model.
Over the summer, retail data provider CoreSight noted a 24 percent increase in store closures over last year as the retail industry adjusts to a shift in consumer shopping to online outlets, inflation, and bankruptcies.

And experts are anticipating that 2025 will be another rocky year for retailers. Some chains have already announced reductions in their numbers, and UBS analysts said the total number of closures could reach 45,000 over the next five years, according to Business Insider.
One of the national chains shutting down shops will be Advance Auto Parts, which will close 727 locations by the middle of next year. Walgreens will start shuttering a quarter of its US locations with 500 being closed in 2025. And Denny's has 100 closures planned for next year after 50 this year, Business Insider reported.

Family Dollar will also shut down locations next year to increase profitability and address operational challenges. Mall stalwarts like JCPenney, Victoria's Secret, Sears, and Foot Locker will shutter locations as well, according to MSN.
