The supermarket chain initially announced plans to close stores in May in an effort to "position the company for growth," and said it will offer jobs at other supermarket locations to workers whose stores will close.

Stop & Shop will also close five stores in Connecticut, 10 in New Jersey, seven in New York and two in Rhode Island. The company said it will still operate more than 350 stores in the Northeast after these closures go into effect.

Officials said employees at the closed stores will be offered jobs at those that will remain open.
