Acton-Boxborough School Committee: Coppolino Says Goodbye after 18 Years: Report

Mike Coppolino opted not to run for another term during the upcoming town election.

ACTON, MA—The Acton-Boxoborough School Committee has said goodbye to a fellow member of 18 years.

March 17 marked the last school committee meeting for Mike Coppolino, who served on the committee for 18 years according to a report by the Acton Beacon. Coppolino was recognized with a cake and recognition at the beginning of the March 17 meeting. Coppolino opted against running for re-election during the March 29 Town Election.

Reports Molly Loughman, who broke the story on the Acton Beacon's website.:

For more than 27 years, Coppolino, a husband and father of three, has lived in Acton. He served as Acton-Boxborough Youth Baseball president for seven years, was a board member for four years and coached boys and girls youth basketball, baseball and softball for 12 years. Coppolino helped get the lights installed at Veterans Field and at the high school baseball field and tennis courts.

During his time as a member, Coppolino said there was always something worthy of the committee’s attention and solution.

“I strongly encourage people at this table, now and in the future, to express your opinions and ask the hard questions. Think independently and respect the public’s opinion, whether or not you agree with them,” said Coppolino.

Coppolino also referred to a quote from American computer scientist and Navy Rear Adm. Grace Hopper, who said, “The most dangerous phrase in the language is 'We've always done it this way.'”

Former School Committee members praised Coppolino for his inclusive and encouraging nature, his unique points of view and for his compassion for the service. Former School Committee member John Petersen was first to note that Coppolino’s nearly two decades on the committee meant he’d participated in 18 Budget Saturdays and that there were six graduating classes that always had a School Committee with Coppolino on it from first grade through their senior year.

There are two Acton seats available on the School Committee this year. You can view Loughman's full report here.
