Acton Parents Beat Cancer Twice in 2016: Now Raising Funds for Cancer Research with 2017 PAN-MASS CHALLENGE Ride

Local Acton family beats cancer twice, now raising money for Dana Farber and cancer research by riding in the 2017 Pan Mass Challenge.

Tag Frothingham (45) and Gwen Gulick (46) have been married for nearly 17 years. They have two children and have lived in Acton since 2010. They committed to ride the PMC together (Wellesley to Provincetown) this year after both of them went through cancer treatment in 2016.

Tag was diagnosed in September of 2015 with early stage Hodgkin's lymphoma, after discovering what initially felt like a hernia. He received 8 rounds of chemotherapy through a clinical trial, completing treatment in February 2016.

In May of 2016, Gwen’s mammogram was flagged as irregular, and she was diagnosed with stage 1, grade 3 breast cancer. She underwent a lumpectomy, four rounds of chemotherapy and 32 radiation treatments. Gwen’s treatment completed on December 19th, 2016.

Today both Gwen and Tag are in remission and working to get things back to “normal,” especially for their kids – Davis (13), and Jane (9). Completing the PMC ride and raising money for cancer research is a big step forward for them.

“We know that cancer research saved our lives and want to help fund research to help others in the future,” says Gwen. “We also committed to this ride to prove to ourselves that we are moving on to the next phase -- no longer cancer patients but cancer survivors. I have less hair, less stamina, and more pounds around my middle now than two years ago, but I am going to do this!”

“We’ve contributed and raised money for cancer research for years, but this year it’s personal,” adds Tag. “Gwen and I are both survivors and we are doing our part to help those who are in the fight --and help others to never have to fight cancer. This is for our friends, families and others who have had to face down this disease.”

Tag and Gwen would appreciate the support of the local community as they train for their first Pan-Mass Challenge.
