Acton's single-family property tax bill to rise 3.4% in FY15

Acton taxpayers may be in for a bit of a shock when they get next year's property tax bill. According to Acton Leadership Group (ALG) documents, the average single-family (ASF) property tax bill will increase by $337, or 3.43%, to $10,171 next year (FY15). The tax rate for FY15 is expected to increase to $19.73 (per thousand) from $19.45 (per thousand) this year.

This is in spite of using $2 million of reserves to cover the FY15 budget deficit and earmarking approximately $700,000 to reduce the Tax Levy increase to 1.5% (Proposition 2 1/2 allows towns to increase the Tax Levy by a maximum of 2.5% each year without an override).

However, if the relative values between classes of property change, the tax bill increases can be higher or lower than the average....
