Ashes-to-Go

Episcopal parish will bring Ash Wednesday to the South Acton Train Station.
Kicking off the Lenten season with Ashes-to-go the Rev. Gareth Evans and lay leader Wendy Feddersen of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Acton will offer the Christian sign of repentance — a cross of ashes on the forehead — to anyone who seeks it at South Acton train station between 4:00 and 6pm on Wednesday, February 18.

Known as Ashes-to-Go, it’s a modern spin on the Ash Wednesday practice followed in the main line churches.
Taking ashes on the streets began in St. Louis in 2007 when Episcopal priest, the Rev. Teresa K.M. Danieley decided to offer people ashes who were literally on the go, between home and work, their way to the coffee shop or where ever.

“Giving and receiving ashes are an ancient way for us to connect with the spirit of Lent, our mortality and the gift of life that stems from God. Wendy and I decided to join the growing movement of churches that are taking this ancient practice into the everyday places where people gather,” says Evans.

“People who come to church will receive their ashes at either 7.30AM and 7:30 PM,” he says. “Commuters at the station heading home after a full work day will also be invited into this profound reminder that they too have been made in God’s image and will one day return to their Maker.”

Church of the Good Shepherd is located at 164 Newtown Road, Acton, MA. For more information visit the church’s website www.goodshepherdacton.org.
