Choosing a New Doctor? 10 Questions to Ask

If you're in the process of choosing a new physician, there are a number of factors which need to be considered when making your decision. While everyone has his or her specific needs, the 10 questions which are listed here provide a basic framework from which to build.

1. Is this doctor covered by your health plan?

2. If hospitalization is needed, what are the hospitals where this doctor practices?

3. Is this doctor a sole practitioner or part of a clinic or practice?

4. Who will cover in the event that the primary physician is not available?

5. Can I communicate with your office via email?

6. How and how frequently will there be communication with other practitioners?

7. What are your office hours?

8. Are medical records available electronically for review by covering physicians?

9. Do you see many patients with my condition?

10. If you are not accepting new patients, who might you recommend?

 

It may feel strange to be "interviewing" a doctor or the staff but most health care professionals will view your questions as a good sign that you're fully invested in being an active participant in meeting your health care goals.
