- Start with the elder. Learn what preferences and concerns exist for your loved one. Invite his or her participation in decision-making whenever possible.
- Learn if family members are available for support or what help they may be able to offer.
- Consult with the primary physician of your loved one regarding medical needs and to obtain referrals for needed services.
- Contact your local senior center and make an appointment with the social worker to learn about available services and programs.
- Consider attending a support group to learn how others have faced similar situations.
- Contact your employee assistance program if you have one. Many employers have some type of assistance program to help employees manage their work life and elder care concerns.
- Hire a geriatric care manager who can navigate the maze of programs, finances and services as well as manage care.
- Consult with a financial planner for advice on best use of income and assets.
