Creating a Team for Elder Care

Family members typically face a number of decisions along the journey of helping to support or care for an aging family member.

But it’s important to remember that these are not questions or decisions which must be faced alone.

Here is a short list of how you can begin to find suggestions, services and solutions:

• Start with the elder. Learn what preferences and concerns exist for your loved one. Invite his or her participation in decision-making whenever possible.
• Learn if family members are available for support or what help they may be able to offer.
• Consult with the primary physician of your loved one regarding medical needs and to obtain referrals for needed services.
• Contact your local senior center and make an appointment with the social worker to learn about available services and programs.
• Consider attending a support group to learn how others have faced similar situations.
• Contact your employee assistance program if you have one. Many employers have some type of assistance program to help employees manage their work life and elder care concerns.
• Hire a geriatric care manager who can navigate the maze of programs, finances and services as well as manage care.
• Consult with a financial planner for advice on best use of income and assets.
