Eldridge, Atkins Wrong on Corporate Speech Ban
Two of our local officials are wrongly supporting a Constitutional amendment to take First Amendment rights away from corporations. This may sound good to some people, but the implications are scary.
Two of our local representatives are pushing for a new Constitutional amendment that would declare that corporations are not "people" and thus have no First Amendment rights. This is in response to a 2010 Supreme Court ruling called Citizens United versus FEC.
"...Let's send a message to our congressional delegation, our congressmen and -women and our senators [sic] to call for a constitutional amendment to amend the Constitution [sic] and make it clear that the constitution, especially the First Amendment, are [sic] for people and not for corporations," Eldridge said as quoted in the Acton Beacon.
Jamie Eldridge and Cory Atkins propose to limit the amount of money corporations can spend on political advertising.

Of course, everyone knows that corporations aren't people. We should pass this law right away, because the Supreme Court made a big mistake. That's according to these Democrats, at least.
Eldridge and Atkins are on a very slippery slope. Why stop at for-profit corporations? Let's include non-profits and advocacy groups. After all, these groups aren't "people" either. So we should include groups like the League of Women Voters, the National Organization of Women, and the NAACP. Heck, let's throw in houses of worship to. These are houses, after all, not people. (Is a house less of a person than a corporation? Debate amongst yourselves...)
