Newer Teacher Pay Increases 7-12% next year

Newer Acton Teachers Getting 7-12% raises next year. Average Acton teacher made over $75,000 in FY10. Compensation is "among the most generous in the state."

Acton and Acton-Boxborough teachers with less than 10 years experience will get average raises of 7-12% next year, according to data provided at the Saturday School Committee “Budget Workshop” of January 28, 2012.

Because newer teachers are paid less than veteran ones, the average raises for teachers with less than 10 years experience are much higher on a percentage basis. Typical “step” raises are $2,000 - $2,500 for all teachers, and teachers who achieve certain educational objectives will get additional “lane” increases of around $2,000.

In the example used at the Workshop, a teacher with a Masters degree at Step 4 was paid $50,853 in FY12. Their new pay next year will be $54,491 with just a step increase (7.15%) or $57,021 with a step and lane increase (12.12%) (Lane - Masters +15). (See attachment, “FY13 salary scale.” The FY12 salary is $1,000 less than the FY13 salary because of a $1,000 COLA increase.)
