Sizzling Day at the A-B Farmers Market

Recap of ABFM's July 8 market day—a real sizzler in more ways than one!

What a day at the market on July 8! Ninety degrees, full sun, and lots and lots of shoppers. Sometimes it's hard to just get down Pearl St. with all the friendly folks you run into. It's a wonderful validation of Acton's community spirit.

And in case you hadn't noticed, our farmers' tables were bursting with a huge variety of produce usually harvested a few weeks later in the summer. There were bags and bags of just-picked sweet corn which sold out within a couple of hours. Tomatoes, something we wait all year for, were there—big red ones, smaller red ones and cherry tomatoes galore. And there were even peaches—yes, peaches are out! Stop at Monadnock Berries' table next week and be sure to get some.

Another trend I noticed: the average age of our shoppers is getting lower if today was any indication—so many kids and babies, not to mention two new ones from our very own board members, Helen Watt and Jennifer Campbell. I did manage to snap a couple of photos of some very young shoppers.

One of our newest wine vendors, Turtle Creek Winery, was there today with samples of their Lincoln, Mass., Chardonnay, and California-grown Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. If you don't know that there's a world class winery in Lincoln you'll be surprised and delighted at the level of quality of these wines. Later this season, the farmers market will be sponsoring a tour of the Lincoln winery. It's a beautiful facility, with vineyards, a state-of-the-art wine laboratory, and a vaulted barrel room. Stay tuned for more details about the tour and how to sign-up. In the meantime, if you'd like to brush-up on the Turtle Creek Winery, here's an article I wrote in 2006.  Enjoy!
