Small Group Addressing a Quiet Need

AFIN is one of the smallest organizations helping to make Acton a nice place to live.

A small group of volunteers are the hearts and hands behind A Friend in Need (AFIN), serving Acton, Boxborough and Maynard. AFIN is one of the smallest organizations helping to make Acton a nice place to live. Many of us do not often consider that there could be people in our midst who need the help that A Friend in Need offers, or if we do aren’t sure where to turn. We also are not always sure where our dollars might make a difference to a local family in our community and want to be sure that what we do give will be used to help others. AFIN fits the bill in several areas.

AFIN started about 20 years ago to be a resource for those who need a bit of help to get over the hump when there was nothing in the bank to pay for a car repair or utilities or another expense that if left unpaid would leave an individual or family in a worse situation. The volunteers work quickly to respond to requests relayed through clergy and social service professionals and will pay bills directly, for example, to the utility company, landlord, or auto repair place thereby avoiding electric shutoff, eviction, or inability to get to work. Depending on what resources are available $300 to $800 can be provided. AFIN has been able to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies.

A Friend in Need is financially supported by Acton Boxborough United Way, Maynard Community Chest and several churches through their Mission and Outreach Funds. In addition, generous community residents provide regular donations and respond to letters published in local newspapers. AFIN passes 100% of the contributions made to people in need. South Acton Congregational Church hosts AFIN’s mailbox and covers the cost of its telephone answering service while the volunteers themselves cover postage and other costs.

AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency.  Local clergy and social service agencies know how to contact A Friend in Need on behalf of an individual in need.  AFIN does not discriminate and will try to help anyone with a genuine need.
