An update on the Celtics off season moves, and the outlook for the 2012-2013 season.

Power Forwards: Kevin Garnett, Jared Sullinger, Brandon Bass,

Notable Additions:  Fab Melo, Jason Collins, Chris Wilcox

What this Means:

The big thing that this roster illustrates is depth, and a mix of young and old players. Last year, one of the key problems for this team was the bench, especially off the bench scoring. Quite simply, it was terrible. The first center we had off the bench was Ryan Hollins or Greg Stiemsma. Hollins was a late trade deadline pickup, and Stiemsma is a rookie. Right away, it was just not good. Pietrus was an all right wing man - he played pretty good defense, but couldn't make shots offensively (most notably the off the catch three pointers).

Outlook:

Probable Starting Lineup:

Rondo, Lee, Pierce, Bass, Garnett

Possible Bench Lineup:

Christmas, Terry, Green, Sullinger, Wilcox/Collins

Note: Avery Bradley is injured. When he comes back, he'll probably be moved into the starting lineup, and Lee will come off the bench.

Conclusion:

  • Danny Ainge did a terrific job.
  • The big issue for this team will be on Doc Rivers and managing minutes. This is a full 82 game season, and Rondo can't be playing 45 minutes a night for the whole stretch. He needs to average 36 minutes a night to reduce the risk of injury, and also give rhythm to the bench.
  • Kevin Garnett - His minutes need to be limited as well. If Doc Rivers can follow Popovich, and the way he uses Tim Duncan, Garnett should be fine.
  • Big Contenders in the East: Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, and Philadelphia 76ers
  • Big Problems: 1. Health 2. Rebounding 3. Chemistry
