Bromfield-AB Rowing Splits Squad for Final Weekend Regattas

Bromfield-AB Varsity Rowers take two gold and three bronze in Saratoga.

The Bromfield-AB Rowing team split its squad into Varsity and Novice teams, with the Varsity teams heading to Saratoga, New York, for the annual Head of the Fish regatta, while the Novice teams competed in the Fall Mass. Public High School Championship regatta in Worcester. Both teams had great showings in their final races of the season. “It was an outstanding ending to the fall season for both our varsity and novice squads,” said Girls Varsity Coach Holly Hatton.

VARSITY ROWERS EARN TWO GOLDS, THREE BRONZE

The Head of the Fish Regatta featured thousands of competitors in 144 races, which included both collegiate and high school athletes. This regatta is one of the largest races in the northeast each fall.

“In the tradition of winning a race in rowing, we had two varsity coxswains taking the plunge this weekend at the regatta,” said Coach Hatton. The Varsity Boys Four (Luca Basile, Charles Watt, Liam Mackin, and Justin Hayes) and the Lightweight Girls Four (Courtney Oka, Meghan Glade, Anna Dawley, and Panna Rasania) both tossed their coxswains, Grace Heavey and Emily Erdos, respectively, into Fish Creek after their boats successfully completed the two-mile course as the fastest crew.

The Boys 4+ earned their Gold Medal with a winning time of 12:12, 16 seconds faster than the second-place boat. Almost 50 boats competed in this race.

The Girls 4+ Lightweight squad took their Gold medal in a time of 13:51, beating rival CRI by four seconds out of a field of 13 competitors. Each rower in the Lightweight Division had a weight limit of 135 pounds.

The first medal of the Regatta for BAB came in the Girls 8+, with the Bromfield team earning the bronze medal in a time of 12:27, just 18 seconds out of first place. There were 39 total entries in the race. Rowers were Courtney Oka, Kirsten Thiim, Anna Dawley, Panna Rasania, Molly Hart, Annie Cooper, Kamryn Stecyk, and Meghan Glade, with Cox Emily Erdos.

The Girls Varsity 4x Final also earned a bronze medal for BAB with a time of 12:53, 35 seconds off the gold-medal pace. 21 crews competed in this event. Rowers were Molly Hart, Kamryn Stecyk, Annie Cooper, and Grace Ott.

The Boys Varsity 1 8+ came in fourth in a time of 10:57, just five seconds behind the bronze medal. There were 41 competitors in this event. Cox Grace Heavey motivated rowers Luca Basile, Cole Winsor, Justin Hayes, Charles Watt, Ed Dunn, Liam Mackin, James O’Shea, and Garrett White.

The Boys Varsity 3 boat came in 7th out of 13 teams with a time of 12:38. Rowers were Pat Pesa, Justin Gordon, Chris Melby, Alex Hill, Kyle Into, Mark Castaneda, Ankit Datta, and Eric Xing, with cox C Kyle Veo.

The Girls 2x “A” boat, with rowers Kirsten Thiim and Ally Goldsher, finished 17th out of 40 teams in a time of 14:46, and the Girls “B” boat with rowers Michelle Ginouves and Claudia Weaver came in 29th in a time of 16:08.

The Girls Varsity 1 4+ placed 11th out of 45 entries in a time of 14:00, 50 seconds slower than the winning time. Rowers were Kati Nugent, Rachel Foote, Emma Stoffel, and Maeve French, with cox Katie Erdos. The Girls Varsity 2 featuring Olivia Hemond, Jordan Werst, Alexis Smith and Hannah Forgo, with Cox Brigitte Lewis, was 19th out of 32 boats.

The Boys 8+ Lightweight finished sixth out of seven boats with a time of 11:57. Weight limit for this race was 155 pounds per rower. Rowers were Justin Hayes, Cole Winsor, Dan Shrived, Garrett White, Connor Reitler, Ryan Doncaster, Mark Borghesani, Kyle Into, with Cox Austin Rotker.

The Girls 2nd Varsity 8+ also earned a bronze medal with a time of 13:00, just 20 seconds out of first place in a field of 23 boats. Rowers were Kati Nugent, Grace Ott, Ally Goldsher, Rachel Foote, Emma Stoffel, Maeve French, Claudia Weaver and Jordan Werst, with Cox Katie Erdos.

The Boys 2x Final placed 16th out of 28 boats in a time of 14:52. Bromfield entered rowers Ed Dunn and James O’Shea.

The Boys 2x Lightweight Final had a seventh-place showing for Bromfield with a time of 13:47. Rowers were Cole Winsor and Garrett White.

Said Boys Varsity Coach Brian DeDominici: “The varsity boys capped off the fall with some of the strongest racing of the season. Everyone came together so well in the past two weeks, and it lead to all crews earning some of the season’s best finishes.”

The Boys JV 4+ finished 22nd out of 39 entries with a time of 14:39. Rowers were Pat Pesa, Justin Gordon, Chris Melby, and Alex Hill, with Cox Brigitte Lewis.

The Boys 4+ Lightweight Final earned Bromfield’s “A” boat a sixth-place finish with a time of 13:52, and the “B” boat came in ninth with a time of 14:13, out of 17 entries. “A” rowers were Connor Reitler, Dan Shrives, Mark Borghesani, and Ryan Doncaster, with Cox Austin Rotker. The “B” crew was comprised of Cox Kyle Veo and rowers Brian Fay, Jack Walsh, Ankit Datta, and Eric Xing.

Varsity Boys “A” single sculler Charles Watt placed fifth out of 38 entries with a time of 13:43 while Luca Basile and Justin Hayes placed fourth and sixth in the “B” race out of 34 entries.

“I am very happy with the effort I saw from everyone and I’m looking forward to our potential in the spring,” said Coach DeDominici.

In the Girls Single “A” Sculling race, Michelle Ginouves placed 15th out of 19 entries in a time of 16:50.

“You work all season to bring your very best effort to your last race and every athlete on our team did this on Sunday. To see the BAB name so high up on so many results lists is always a thrill,” said Girls Varsity Coach Holly Hatton.

Next week we will feature the results in the Novice races in Worcester in which Bromfield-Acton-Boxborough also took its share of gold medals.
