ACTON -- Nine Boston University alumni volunteers recently devoted a
portion of their weekend to serving at Household Goods and helping
people in need make a home.

The volunteers' stint on April 15 was timely and valuable, coming during
school vacation week, when some of the nonprofit group's regulars were
out of town.

John Fallon, Household Goods' manager on duty, said: "We really needed
them Saturday since about half of our usual high school crew was on
vacation."

Malcolm Krongelb of Acton, a BU alumnus and a member of
Household Goods' Communications Team, coordinated the Global Days of
Service effort. After the eight other BU alumni arrived, he gave them a
tour of the center and then put them to work. The BU volunteers went to
the Household Goods triage room, where they began vacuuming and
inspecting furniture, testing small appliances, unpacking and inspecting
mattresses and wiping down donated artwork. As each piece became ready
for clients to choose, the BU volunteers moved them out to the correct
locations for shopping.

Some
of the BU volunteers later got called away from the triage room to help
unload a Household Goods truck arriving with donated goods.

The experience resonated deeply with a couple of the alums. "One is planning to become a regular Household Goods volunteer, and another is interested," Krongelb said.

Sharon Martens, Household Goods executive director, had high praise for the BU volunteers' efforts: "They were amazing! So glad we had them.”

The ongoing BU Global Days of Service program is held in April each year. Alumni volunteers have helped out at Household Goods several times in recent years.

Household Goods provides a full range of donated furniture and household
