Expect Church Bell Ringing in West Acton Village May 9 between 12-3pm 
The 1854 Bronze Bell created by Henry Hooper in a forge once owned by Paul Revere will be ringing at the West Acton Baptist Church between 12 and 3 pm on Saturday May 9, 2026 as a part of the West Acton Village Merchants Association’s Spring Fling. The church at 592 Massachusetts Avenue, corner of Central Street, is asking for community donations toward restoration of the belltower/steeple of the historic meeting house style building that is a landmark for Acton. On May 9th a $20 donation gives 1 or 2 people in a family the chance to ring the antique bell by pulling on the long rope that makes it all happen. A $30 donation gives a family of up to 4 people in that fun privilege.
The steeple restoration and repair effort has been approved by Acton's Historic District Commission. Work is expected to begin June 2026. 
Donations are tax-deductible and will be matched by anonymous donors.

Friday, May 15, 10AM-12PMMake a mini mandala!&nbsp; In this class, you will build on the basic skills you practiced in An Introduction to the Zentangle®&nbsp;Method by learning new patterns and explore different ways tangle patterns are structured and can be combined (Tangleations). Through guided instruction and gentle coaching, you will continue to explore how intentional lines and repetition can help reduce stress and nurture relaxation and flow. One stroke at a time, you will learn how to approach more complex patterns. During this class, you will create your own small works of Zentangle-inspired art in a peaceful, mindful, non-judgmental environment.&nbsp;
Adult / 16+&nbsp; Prerequisite: Introduction to Zentangle or similar.&nbsp;All materials provided.&nbsp;

The Acton Historical Society invites you to tour the 1760 Jonathan Hosmer House and to view a collection of artifacts associated with Acton's history. During this one day workshop you will explore the lushness of acrylic paints. Drawing and painting on paper is a fresh and direct way to bring intuition and spontaneity to your artmaking. Kathy will demonstrate on paper with a wide variety of brushes, paint, and drawing materials. She will thoughtfully guide you through exercises to flex your imagination and encourage both subtle and dynamic mark making.&nbsp;&nbsp;We will use a variety of brushes and drawing materials on paper. Starting with drawing as the foundation for structure, we will&nbsp; layer with paint as the process begins and explore line and color, both wet and dry, to create your unique image.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;About the Instructor -&nbsp; Kathy Deflice-Secor

<ul><li>Kathy's brushes are all soft and synthetic water/acrylic brushes. These give the surface a smooth lush surface while blending. &nbsp;</li><li>1” wash style brushes - if you have more than one bring them.&nbsp;</li><li>Kathy also uses larger brushes from 2-3" inches those are also synthetic and soft.&nbsp;</li><li>Palette knives are great way to open up areas on your surface. They bring variety and dimension to your image.&nbsp;</li></ul>
Drawing Materials:
<ul><li>Colored pencils</li><li>Crayons water soluble or not</li><li>Water soluble graphite pencils. Derwent Graphite water soluble pencils are wonderful.&nbsp;</li><li>Example 2B 4B 6B and 8B this is the softest allowing a rich dark velvety mark.&nbsp;</li></ul>
Acrylic Paint:
<ul><li>Kathy uses Golden and Liquitex brands&nbsp;</li><li>Have on hand your full palette. With so many varieties of colors and formulas to chose from it can be over whelming.&nbsp;</li><li>There is no set traditional palette. &nbsp;Have on hand a variety of warm and cool dark and light colors and white.</li><li>Kathy will be using soft and heavy body along with fluid paints and mediums.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>No need to bring mediums Kathy will supply this for you. &nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ul>

Saturday, May 23, 10AM-12PMKeeping a nature journal helps people connect with the natural world in direct and personal ways. Drawing sharpens observational skills. Careful notes add scientific value. Writing adds context and richness. The workshop begins with a look at the new book Monarch and Mourning Cloak: A Butterfly Journal, by Melissa Stewart and Sarah Brannen, which is in the form of an elaborate nature journal, followed by a brief history of nature journaling and demonstrations of different types. Then, the hands-on activity will include small blank notebooks and objects to draw. We start with the date, time, place and additional details, and discuss close observation. Participants may spend more time writing prose or poetry than drawing if they prefer.
Bring pens and pencils to sketch with, and colored pencils and watercolors if you like to use them. We’ll go outside if weather permits.

Looking closely at nature inspires a huge range of imaginative artwork, from abstraction and decorative work to illustration and cartooning. In this online drawing workshop, we’ll look at a wide variety of examples to get us started and then explore techniques for unleashing the imagination through the drawing process. Class size will be limited to allow time for individual feedback. All skill levels welcome. Supplies: a multipurpose sketchbook or drawing paper (preferably 9 x 12 or larger), drawing pencils of different hardnesses, erasers, pencil sharpener. You’re also welcome to use colored pencils, pens or any other materials that you’d like.
PLEASE NOTE:
<ul><li>This workshop will take place on zoom.&nbsp; Registered students will receive a link no more than three days prior to the workshop.</li><li>Recommended Supplies: drawing pencils, paper or sketchbook, eraser, pencil sharpener.</li><li>Open to ages 16+</li></ul>
About the Instructor:
Artist and educator Erica Beade worked as a scientific illustrator for many years, combining her love of science, nature, and drawing. Her traditional and digital illustrations have appeared in numerous books, exhibitions, and journals. Since 2002, she has taught observational drawing at the Harvard Museum of Natural History and many other venues, with a focus on nature.
