Worship with Us! Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Most of us would prefer a world where what we see is what we get. We ask an honest question and expect an honest answer. We do the right thing and expect the right thing to come back around. We like life to be predictable, orderly, ours to manage. The trouble is that life does not always cooperate, and you have lived long enough to know it.

This Sunday we meet Jacob, who labored seven long years for the woman he loved and woke on his wedding morning to find the wrong sister beside him. "When morning came, it was Leah." Have you ever chosen Rachel and awakened with Leah? I suspect most of us have.

I will be honest with you: this sermon began in my own kitchen, in a particular spring some of us would just as soon forget. Empty streets. Birdsong where the traffic used to be. The smell of baking bread drifting down a block full of neighbors I barely knew. It was one of the loveliest seasons I can remember. It was also one of the saddest. Both at once.

I am not going to tell you what happened on the doorstep. For that, you will have to come on Sunday. What I will tell you is this: Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is like a seed too small to notice, like yeast you cannot see working, like treasure buried in a field you have walked past a thousand times. What you see is never all you get. There is always more going on than meets the eye.
