Event Spotlight: A Spanish-Flavored Evening - Fuenteovejuna

After a very successful run of Pippin, is ready to present the Festival play, Fuenteovejuna, on Tuesday, Feb 28, 7:30 pm in the A-B auditorium.

To enhance the Spanish flavor of the evening, three
performing artists from The Flamenco Dance Project
in Boston will perform before the play is presented. The
trio includes dancer and artistic director Sabrina Aviles, accompanied by singer Fernando de Malaga and guitarist Juanito Pascual.

Written in 1614 by Lope de Vega and based on an actual incident in 1476, Fuenteovejuna (say: foo-hente-ova-hoona) centers on the decision of an entire village to retaliate against a tyrannical ruler after he terrorizes the citizens and attacks the young women. A contemporary of Shakespeare, de Vega is considered Spain's most important playwright and this is his most famous play. The story draws parallels to the current political upheaval in Middle Eastern countries where citizens have successfully rebelled against tyrannical leaders. This play contains scenes of violence and may not be appropriate for children under the age of 13.

The 40-minute cutting of the play is directed by Linda Potter. It was adapted and translated from the original version by Diego Mansilla who is on the World Language faculty at A-B. He is also working with the cast on the history, culture and language of Spain. This production will also be presented at the first round of the METG Drama Festival on March 3, 2012, 11:15 a.m. at Leominster High School.

Tickets for the evening are $11 for adults and $6 for students. They are available at the ticket table in the auditorium lobby starting at 6:30 pm. ABSAF, Staff, and Season Ticket holders may show passes at the ticket table. For more information, visit ABDrama.org or email ABDrama@comcast.net.
