Honeybees Vanishing, AGC Plant Sale to Attract Pollinators

Saturday May 20th, AGC Plant Sale at 9am Acton Center of town, the red house to buy plants that support & attract natural pollinators

Saturday May 20th, the Acton Garden Club will be selling milkweed, perennial flowering plants, vegetables and herbs that support our local pollinators.

Not only honeybees and monarch butterflies are in trouble from urbanization and overuse of pesticides and herbicides but also our native pollinators such as bumblebees, wasps, flies and some beetles. In fact, the Rusty Patched Bumblebee-Bombus affinis-has declined 95% and is the first native bee species to be listed as endangered in the continental U.S.

Vegetables and fruit need pollinators! Without pollinators, most flowering plants could not reproduce. One third of our food plants such as tomatoes, apples, almonds and squash plants depend on pollinators to pollinate their flowers. There are 100s of local pollinators and beneficial insects that can be attracted to your garden by planting and assortment of nectar plants such as milkweed and perennial herbs.
The Acton Garden Club will have information about our local pollinating insects, nectar plants for sale and some ideas for organic practices
to avoid using harmful chemicals.
