Aftermath of Uprising at Maximum Security Prison: PHOTOS, VIDEO

Guards were evacuated from a housing unit Monday evening after prisoners refused to return to their cells and damaged much of the unit.

SHIRLEY, MA – The Massachusetts Department of Corrections on Tuesday released a series of photos chronicling the damage done by inmates at a state maximum security prison and the weapons used to carry out the mayhem.

The situation began around 3:50 p.m. Monday afternoon in the P1 housing unit of the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center when two individuals began fighting, according to a statement released to media outlets by Department of Corrections spokesman Christopher Fallon. Officers attempted to secure approximately 46 inmates in their cells when an altercation broke out between two prisoners, according to Fallon.

One prisoner was secured, but the remaining inmates resisted, and the decision was made to remove correctional staff from the unit.

Ultimately, police deployed a chemical agent into the unit to restore order. There were no significant injuries to prison staff or inmates, but the prisoners damaged much of the housing unit, including breaking off sprinkler heads and destroying the camera and computer systems with fire extinguishers and makeshift weapons, Fallon said.
