POLL: When Do High School Student Sports Fanatics Take it Too Far? [VIDEO]
Basketball games between rival high schools bring out the purest energy in it's student fans; both positive and negative.
For Acton-Boxborough sports fans, a varsity boys' basketball rivalry game has everything riding on it: pride, tradition, and for some, the realization that this is their last high school season. Droves of fanatics pack the student section during these match-ups, attending the games with an intense amount of team spirit not unlike a division-one championship NCAA game.
But when does a small fire start to spread out of control?
Last Friday, the Acton-Boxborough gymnasium was practically sold out for the Acton-Boxborough vs. Westford doubleheader. Both student sections were packed for both the girls' and boys' games, but the student population turned up their energy when the first whistle went off to start the boys’ game.

Negative chants, cheers and referee boos from both fan sections blasted throughout all four quarters of the game. In the attached video clip, the AB student section chanted to the Westford fans and players (as did the Westford student section throughout the game). The shots highlighted in the video clip have been edited to eliminate vulgar language. At one point during the game, an AB fan crowd-surfed his way from the top of the student section down to nearly the last row of students standing on the court.
Do you think this type of cheering is a healthy form of excitement at a big high school basketball game — or has it gotten a bit out of hand? Weigh in on the Acton Patch Poll and tell us what you think in the comment section.
