R.J. Grey Staff Enjoys Appreciation Luncheon
RJ Grey staff members were recently treated to a delicious meal provided by parents.
Three years ago, already busy with holiday preparations for her family, parent Cathy Griffin volunteered to take on a new task: treat the school’s entire staff to a luncheon of homemade entrees, salads and desserts.
"At McCarthy-Towne there had always been a luncheon like this, so I thought the junior high should have one, too,” said Griffin of her motivation.
Predictably, the gesture was well-received by grateful teachers and administrators.

The luncheon, which has become a tradition, occurs on a half day when students are dismissed early in order for their teachers to conduct conferences with parents. “We try to time it so there will be a few days for teachers to enjoy any leftovers we might have. It is always a beautiful spread.”
On Dec. 20, Cathy spent several hours at the school’s cafeteria, ensuring that the fourth annual luncheon would be a success.

Griffin said that she depends on parent volunteers stepping up to provide food, beverages, paper goods and table decorations. “We had 50 helpers this year. That is about average. We really could not do it with fewer than that,” said Griffin. “There are about 120 on staff at the junior high.”
Parents began dropping off non-perishable donations the night before the luncheon. The next morning, the perishable food began arriving at 7 a.m.
“The staff sets up the cafeteria with buffet tables and round tables, and the parents do the rest,” said Griffin. "They organize the food, brew the coffee, keep the buffet stocked and clean up.”
By all accounts, the event's goal was realized.
“It made my night,” said 8-Gold teacher Adrienne Calotta, who explained that she usually prepares her lunch at home, but realized she wouldn’t have to do so the evening before the event.
Parent Susan McMahon, who is experienced in preparing gluten-free food for a family member, made separate dishes for a teacher who has the same dietary restriction. The teacher was very happy when McMahon presented her with the multi-course meal.
Denis Reedy, who directs R.J. Grey’s CLASS program, said of the luncheon, "We all look forward to it every year.” Explaining that it’s difficult for the staff to socialize outside of school in December, he said, “It’s awesome to be together during the holidays.”
Counselor Caroline O’Brien, speaking to Griffin and the other parents who were staffing the luncheon, said, “You’ve made people very happy.
