Twelve Local Seniors to be Extras in 'Labor Day' Film

The Acton Senior Center is temporarily closed today due to a major motion picture film shoot.

The cast and crew of Jason Reitman's "," will be filming at the today. Kate Winslet's character is teaching a dance class and the production crew for the scene.

The set will be closed off to the public. Police will guard the entrance up the hill to the Senior Center. Audubon Drive will not be closed, only the hill leading up to the Senior Center.

Council on Aging Director, Sharon Mercurio, said twelve Acton Senior Center patrons were chosen by the production crew to be extras in the scene.

"As soon as they [Acton Senior Center patrons] heard that the movie was being filmed in Acton, a lot of them went out and got – so that interest and excitement was here right from the beginning," said Mercurio. "Bringing it even closer to home and having it come here to the Senior Center brought a lot of excitement to all of us."

Mercurio said the seniors who heard the crew was looking for extras to use for the scene were so excited they started taking out 'how to dance' videos from the library.

"I feel bad that they couldn't use everyone," said Mercurio. "I look at our folks here and everyone has something to contribute."

Leading up to Town Meeting 2012, a lot of folks, including Mercurio, because the current facility is not up-to-date. It was turned down at Town Meeting and maybe for the best because it was exactly what the director was looking for.

"They did like it because it was aged, you know, because it is supposed to be an older Senior Center and have that look – they weren't looking for a new facility. So, well, we fit the bill," Mercurio said with a laugh.
