Andover EEE Risk: Town Encourages Residents To Protect Themselves

Residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor activities at peak mosquito times, dawn and dusk.

ANDOVER, MA — In 2019, Massachusetts had twelve recorded cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis, with six deaths. Risk is currently low across the state, but the town of Andover shared tips Monday for preventing EEE transmission.

In a video PSA, the town shared four tips on preventing infections:

  1. Pick the best time: Residents are encouraged to avoid activities at peak mosquito times, dawn and dusk.
  2. Dress the part: Wear long sleeves and pants
  3. Use bug spray
  4. Mosquito-proof your home: Clear standing water where mosquitoes can breed.

"Residents should take necessary precautions when enjoying time outdoors, such as applying insect repellent," Health Director Tom Carbone said. "Contracting EEE is rare, but the infection can cause significant damage to one’s health. Please remain aware of ways to avoid contact with mosquitoes when outside."
