ANDOVER, MA -- Carissa Yip, 14, of Andover won last week's U.S. Girls’ Junior Chess Championships in St. Louis. Yip won six of nine matches against the best under-21 players in the country at the St. louis Chess Club to take the title, which comes with a $3,000 prize and an automatic entry the 2018 U.S. Women’s Championship, the nation’s top invitational chess event.
"I’ve played in the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship for five years and I’m usually one of the top seeds, but I do really badly," Yip said in a press release issued by the club. "I’m glad this year it’s better."
Yip is a student at Phillips Academy. She became the youngest female grandmaster in chess at age 11.
