Plow-Zone Archaeology: A Taphonomy Experiment from the Midwest
Sarah Kiley Schoff, is a Ph.D. candidate in Anthropology at the University of Florida and owner of Cold Case FACTS, a Massachusetts- based archaeology and forensic consulting company specializing in human remains.
Taphonomy is the study of decaying organisms over time and how they may become fossilized. An experiment in a cultivated field in Indiana studied the distribution and damage caused to bone by agricultural practices. Archaeological survey and taphonomic analysis was conducted to test models designed to predict artifact movement. Ms. Schoff will discuss how this information is used to locate and maximize the recovery of human remains dispersed in cultivated fields.
