One Injured As Commuter Rail Train Derails In Andover

The slow-speed derailment caused massive delays on the MBTA's Haverhill Commuter Rail line.

ANDOVER, MA -- At least one person was injured when an inbound commuter train derailed between the Ballardville Station in Andover and the Wilmington station Monday morning. In a statement, Keolis said the "slow speed, upright derailment" of the first two cars occurred around 8:20 am when the train passed through a misaligned switch. The statement said there was no reason to suspect foul play.

Of the 400 passengers on the train, one was injured when he hit his head but declined medical treatment. Those passengers were transferred to shuttle buses, as were passengers on an outbound train that got held up by the delays in Reading. As of 12:30 pm on Monday, the MBTA was still using shuttle buses to move passengers on the Haverhill line between Reading and Ballardville, according to a MBTA post on Twitter.

Police escorts traveled with buses transporting the shuttled passengers. There were also massive crowds of passengers at the affected stations.
