Heathers: The Musical, presented by ACT Theater Company

The musical version is based on Heathers, the 1988 American cult black comedy film written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann. It stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty. The film portrays four teenage girls—three of whom are named Heather—in a clique at a fictional Ohio high school.
Desson Thomson of the Washington Post wrote, "Wickedly funny. In fact, Heathers may be the nastiest, cruelest fun you can have without actually having to study law or gird leather products. If movies were food, Heathers would be a cynic's chocolate binge." Roger Ebert wrote that the film "...is a morbid comedy about peer pressure in high school, about teenage suicide and about the deadliness of cliques that not only exclude but also maim and kill."

So why come see the musical, particularly if you have or are an older teen? Because past the singing, dancing, cynicism, and dark comedy aspect, Heathers speaks to peer pressure, sex and dating, drug and alcohol use, social aggression and intimidation, manipulative and abusive relationships, and many other social pressures faced by teens. The clueless adult figures stand as the parody of how teens view the adults in their universe: lacking in empathy and true understanding about what they're going through, even though many times the adults really DO "get it" better than the teens realize. Beyond the jokes and easy laughs, Heathers is a look at the social jungle high school can be at its worst. It's entertainment that reminds us of what we survived if we're past that stage, and reminds us what our teens can face at school if we're parents.
