ARLINGTON, MA — Residents who have difficulty using a conventional bicycle now have access to a new adaptive cycling program on the Minuteman Bikeway.

The Adult Recumbent Tricycle Rental Program is designed to make the bikeway more accessible to adults with disabilities, balance challenges, and other mobility-related issues. The pilot program is currently available on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in one-hour rental slots.

Rentals are free, but participants must register through the Arlington Recreation website at least one day in advance. Officials said residents who do not already have an account should create one before registering.

Before using a tricycle, participants must review the program's safety information and complete a rental release form, both of which are available through the registration website.

Rentals begin at the Arlington Trike Shed located in the parking lot of the Ed Burns Arena at 422 Summer St. Staff and volunteers will be available to adjust the tricycles for riders, though officials said participants should be able to mount and dismount the trikes independently. Those who need assistance are encouraged to be accompanied by another person.

The program was developed through a partnership between the Arlington Disability Commission, the Arlington Health and Human Services Department, and the Arlington Recreation Department. It was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Office on Disability.

Officials said the current Wednesday schedule could expand in the future based on demand and participant feedback.

Residents with questions about the program can contact the Arlington Health & Human Services Department at 781-316-3170 or by email.
