ARLINGTON, MA — The local Fire Department is working to inspect and flush fire hydrants throughout southeast Arlington ahead of the winter season.
The inspections began Tuesday and will continue through Saturday, Nov. 14, in Zone 5, an area that includes neighborhoods south of Massachusetts Avenue to Route 2 from Grove Street to the Cambridge line. The hydrants will be opened, flushed, and inspected to make sure they drain properly and do not freeze during colder weather. According to the town, the inspections are less extensive than the Department of Public Works' annual flushing operation and are unlikely to cause a significant loss of water pressure or rusty water.
Residents may nonetheless experience temporary water discoloration while hydrants are being inspected. Authorities advise residents who notice rusty water to run their cold-water faucets until the water becomes clear. Residents should not use hot water or do laundry until the discoloration is gone.
Those who continue to experience water-quality or pressure problems should contact DPW Dispatch at 781-316-3301.
