The Arlington Community Education Winter 2020 catalog will soon be arriving in mailboxes. Preview the catalog online now at ArlingtonCommunityEd.org. Registration opens Monday, November 25 at 10 a.m. and classes for adults and kids begin the week of January 13.

Over 150 adult classes are being offered this winter. Classes are held at Arlington High School in the evening and other locations around town, including daytime classes at the senior center. There are 36 new classes this term, such as “Drawing in Pubs,” “Banjo Basics,” “Felted Scarf Workshop,” “Financial Wellness Roadmap,” “Google Drive Made Simple,” “Renovation Design Studio,” and “Incredible Card Tricks!” A new social dance instructor will be teaching “Smooth Moves” and “Salsa and Club Latin.” New writing classes focus on flash fiction, poetry appreciation, autobiography and haiku.

Returning favorites include whiskey, wine, and tea tastings; sewing and embroidery; painting, drawing, and digital photography; bridge and mah jongg; yoga, Qigong, and tai chi; Spanish, Italian, French, Arabic, and Russian languages; and cooking classes such as dumpling making and cookie baking. Winter walking tours include maple sugaring and an Art Deco architecture outing.

Adult Special Interest evenings feature: “The Power of the Zodiac: Historic Notables and their Signs,” with local historian Dee Morris, “Active Bystander Training: Become an ‘Upstander,’” and Shakespeare on Love” with UMass professor Robert Lublin. Declutter your life with “Out with the Old, In with the New,” taught by psychotherapist and author Lauren Mackler. Learn how to brew the perfect cup of coffee at home with “Home Coffee Brewing Science,” ensure a supply of fresh eggs with “Raising Chickens for Eggs,” and find out how to keep bees at “Beekeeping for Beginners.”

Youth programs also start the week of January 13, with KidZone at all seven elementary schools and TeenZone for grades 6-9 at Gibbs, Ottoson, and Arlington High School. Classes are once a week for 60-90 minutes for 5-10 weeks. Driver’s Ed and College Prep classes for high school students are also offered for high school students.

ACE has increased the Family Night offerings due to demand and is featuring ten evening classes for adults and kids to take together this term. Classes include paper marbling, weaving, cookie painting, sewing, meatballs, tacos, and card tricks, as well as the return of balloon twisting, glass art and pop-up cards.

The VacationFun! enrichment program runs February 18-21 at AHS for grades K-8. Taught by experienced teachers, there are full-day and half-day options that can be combined for full day coverage during February break.
