Arlington Cultural Council awards $12,300 in Grants

Lisabet Taylor, chair of the Arlington Cultural Council, announces the award of 17 grants, totaling $12,300, for cultural programs in Arlington. The grants range from $200 to $1,500, with an average grant of $724. Grantees were chosen from thirty competitive applications. The 2017 grant recipients represent a wide range of the arts and culture: music, visual, film, and literature.

“Given ACC's limited budget, we are thrilled to be able to partially fund almost two-thirds of the requests. Arlington has an amazing creative sector, including artists, humanitarians and imaginative problem solvers. We look forward to celebrating them and the aesthetic and economic impact of the arts and culture at our annual April event,” said Taylor.

• Arlington Center for the Arts presents Arlington Porchfest- Porchfest is an outdoor community music festival, where local bands play on porches in a day-long celebration of music and community.
• Arlington Children's Theatre ACT's Summer Season Actor Financial Aid The project is for the financial aid program for ACT's August productions to assist Arlington child actors in need of financial assistant to participate in the production.
• Arlington Commission on the Arts and Culture Pathways ACAC and Arlington Public Art will collaborate to commission 2 artists to create temporary public artwork along the Minuteman Bike Path in spring of 2017.
• Belmont World Film Family Festival will present fifteen programs of animated and live action short and feature length film programs from countries around the world during Martin Luther King Day weekend, featuring an appearance of creative director of Aardman; Merlin Crossingham.
• Cantilena will perform in a concert entitled “Radiant Sister” on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at UU Church of Arlington, 630 Massachusetts Avenue. For this concert, Cantilena is featuring a newly commissioned work by Ellen Gilson Voth.
• Creek River String Band will perform a concert at the Old Schwamb Mill (TBA)
• Nayda A. Cuevas will have a Pop Up art show “Puerto Rico and the United States “ on March 11, 2017 at Art Lounge 1346 Mass Ave Arlington
• Delvena Theatre Company will have a performance of “Truly Eleanor”, a candid look at our greatest First Lady, at Robbins Library (TBA).
• Claudia Donnet, with Sarab-Mirage Dance Company, under the direction Seyyide Sultan, will present a staged dance performance consisting of dances of the Middle East this Spring (TBA) at the Arlington Center for the Arts.
• Dan Fox presents the 6th Annual Arlington Jazz Festival, previously the A-Town Jazz Festival, on April 17-30 at various Arlington venues, and will include free and ticketed events featuring professional musicians, as well as adult amateurs and students from AHS.
• Marc Gurton and 13FOREST Gallery will have a Día de los Muertos artist residency, resulting in the construction of a window installation timed to coincide with National Hispanic Heritage Month and Capitol Square’s annual celebration of Day of the Dead. October at 29 4-6pm

• Steve Henderson will present the play Mabel and Jerry on February 13, 2017 at 1:00 p.m at the Arlington Council on Aging.
• Laura A. Kiesel will coach Writing for Survival "Where I Come From and Where I am Going" – expressive writing sessions at Young Adult Vocational Program in Arlington Heights and Wayside Youth's STEP program in Arlington Center this Winter and early Spring.
• Andrea Nicolay will host the Arlington Author Salons quarterly at the Kickstand Café, with local authors reading from and discussing their works.
• Old Schwamb Mill will present Musical Storytelling Programs on Saturday, September 30 as part of their annual open house.
• Powers Music School will perform Musical Storytelling Programs in Arlington in February at Robbins Library and the Arlington Center for the Arts, presenting musical versions of 2 books by by Doreen Cronin: “Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type” and “Click, Clack, Surprise!”
• True Story Theater is planning four events on how to recognize and address abuse in intimate relationships, Protecting Our Loved Ones, this Spring (TBA) at Robbins library community room & AYCC Room.
