Arlington Runners Earn Top Seeds for Divisional Meets

A handful of Spy Ponders and Cougars are in contention to win their events.

Today is Friday, May 24. Here are five things you need to know.

1.) This weekend, the Arlington High and Arlington Catholic track and field teams will compete in their respective divisional meets. In the Division 2 meet at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham Saturday (boys/girls), Arlington High senior Leland Garrahan is seeded third in the long jump, just an 1.75 inches behind the first and second seeds, with a best of 22 feet, 3.25 inches this season. On the girls’ side, senior Sarah Cassidy is seeded third in the javelin with a best of 122 feet this season.

Arlington Catholic will compete at the Division 4 meet at North Reading High School on Sunday (boys/girls). For the boys’, senior Kevin Connors leads the way, with the No. 6 seed in the mile at 4:31.40. The girls’ team is led by senior Janelle Solviletti in the mile. She earned the No. 2 seed with a 5:07.04. The girls’ 4x400-meter-relay team, with Solviletti, junior Serena McNary, sophomore Sarah Maimone and freshman Emily Guerreiro, is also seeded second in 4:19.64.

2.) The ninth-seeded Arlington High boys’ volleyball team defeated No. 8 Boston Latin Academy Thursday in the first round of the Division 1 North bracket. The Spy Ponders are now in the quarterfinals.
