The bicyclist was lying on his back in the street when emergency personnel arrived shortly after 7 a.m. He was transported to Lahey Clinic in Burlington with shoulder and back pain, according to police.

The driver told police that he was traveling away from Mass. Ave. on Water Street at roughly 25 mph and that no one was waiting at the bike path crosswalk on Water Street when he decided to continue on. He said after he went through crosswalk, he looked to his left and saw the bicyclist, who was traveling toward Alewife Station, enter the crosswalk at “full speed.”

He said he immediately stepped on his brakes and swerved to avoid a collision with the bicyclist. However, he was unable to, he said, as the bicyclist struck the rear driver’s side quarter panel of his vehicle. He immediately stopped and called 911, he said.

A witness riding behind the bicyclist on the bike path corroborated the driver’s story, police said.

The vehicle sustained moderate damage to its rear driver’s side door and quarter panel. The bicycle suffered minor damage to its front wheel.
