Bridge the Gap Presents Check for $483K

School Committee received funds Tuesday night, more to come.

Tuesday night, the Arlington Education Foundation's Bridge the Gap campaign presented the School Committee with a check for $483,000 raised through their efforts.

The money raised will go directly to the running of the Arlington Public Schools and though it is still possible to donate, the official time of solicitation ended on June 15.

After receiving an extension at the June 8 School Committee meeting, the Bridge the Gap campaign for the Arlington schools was able to raise another $86,000 in the past two weeks to put toward adding back some of the positions cut from the school budget because of the $4 million budget deficit.

The campaign started after the April 27 School Committee meeting. Volunteers have held yard sales, concerts, bake sales and more. Local businesses have contributed their time and efforts as well.

"One of our first donations came from two third-graders who set up a lemonade stand. Our last was a partner level gift from Armstrong Ambulance," said Julie Brazile, one of the members of the Bridge the Gap steering committee. "The check is comprised of allowances and birthday money students wanted to give."

"You have all given up the last three or four months of your live, but through your hard work and participation, you have helped bridge the gap," said School Committee member Joseph Curro.

"You have made a big difference and we will forever be grateful," said Superintendent Kathleen Bodie.
