Stories of Pride: LGBTQ+ History and Art in Cyrus Dallin’s World

Event Details

Cyrus Dallin Art Museum, 611 Massachusetts Ave, Arlington, MA, 02474

In honor of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, Arlington’s Dallin Art Museum is sponsoring a special tour this Sunday, June 14 at 4 pm. Celebrate inclusion and creativity while gaining a deeper understanding of the social and cultural landscape of Dallin’s era, his artistic influences, and his relationships with diverse people.

Visitors are invited to make connections between Cyrus Dallin’s art and the compelling stories of LGBTQ+ artists, writers, and intellectuals in Dallin’s creative circle or who were later influenced by his work. Individuals highlighted include John Singer Sargent, Rosa Bonheur, Anne Whitney, Thomas McKeller, and contemporary artist Kent Monkman.

Dallin Museum Docent ManagerEmma Bresnan says, “While learning about Cyrus Dallin’s life and work, I kept finding stories of influential people in his life whom we would consider LGBTQ+ in today’s terminology.

“This tour is a way to weave those stories together to explore the sometimes-surprising ways that LGBTQ+ people carved out lives for themselves in artistic circles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It’s a reminder that people have always lived outside of society’s expectations around gender and sexuality.”

The Dallin Museum is located at 611 Mass Ave in Arlington Center, at the corner of Mass Ave and Mystic St. Free parking is available in the municipal lot behind the building, located off Mystic St.

Suggested donation: $5 for members, $10 for nonmembers

Space is limited! Please register here.

Dallin Art Museum

The Dallin Art Museum is a hallmark to artist, educator, Indigenous rights advocate, and former Arlington resident, Cyrus Dallin. It contains the largest collection of Dallin’s art in the world, and is typically open for visits on Saturdays and Sundays, 12 to 4 pm.

Located on the ancestral land of the Massachusett Tribe, the museum pays its respects to their descendants who still inhabit this land today.
