Dear Parents, Alums and Community Members:
We invite you to a farewell party for AHS Principal Charlie Skidmore who retires at the end of this school year. Please join us on the lawn outside Arlington High on Friday, June 10 from 6-8pm for entertainment, refreshments and the chance to say goodbye to Charlie before he leaves Arlington. Stop by or bring a lawn chair to linger and enjoy the evening. (We’ll move the party indoors if it rains.)
Many of us know Charlie best from the moving “Parent Updates” he has sent us via email for the past seven years. In these essays, he has expressed his affection for our children, and has shared his thoughts on what it takes to live a worthwhile life. And we’ve come to know a person of humor, intelligence and heart. A complete collection of these essays and his AHS commencement speeches, edited by AHS parent Martha Parravano, will be for sale at the party on June 10. They make great graduation gifts!

As a lasting tribute, the AHS Media Center will receive a face-lift in the fall of 2011 and will be re-dedicated as the Charles Arlington Skidmore Learning Commons. Charlie’s vision calls for making the area a hub of information that traverses both the print and digital worlds. Plans include renovating the physical space to make it more inviting; updating the core collection; purchasing essential databases and technologies that support the AHS curriculum; and collaborating with faculty to teach students how to analyze the information available to them.
Funding for creation of the Learning Commons will come from the sale of Charlie’s essays and from donations from people like you. Please make a donation to support this important renovation that will benefit the AHS community for years to come. Go to http://www.arlingtoneducationfoundationma.org/ (click on Skidmore Fundraiser) to donate today; the Arlington Education Foundation is acting as fiscal agent for this fundraising project.

We hope to see you on June 10. And please pass this invitation along to families whose students have graduated from AHS. They and AHS alums are most welcome.
Sincerely,
Sally Chvany, Nina Coles and Donna Eidson -- Event Co-Chairs
