Recently, a hate group known as the Westboro Baptist Church threatened to come to Arlington to picket the Arlington Children’s Theater’s production of The Laramie Project. Over the past six years, this group has picketed in Lexington seven times. Its targets have included six churches and the high school. Always staying just inside their right to free speech, the protesters picketed with signs and verbal rants, attacking these communities for their support of those who are Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual or Transgender.
In response, Lexington residents and faith community members were trained by Arlington resident Dennis Brown in nonviolent and effective responses to such picketing. This response is rooted in the Principles of Nonviolence taught by Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr.
