Good Samaritans who Saved Woman from Sinking Car in Arlington Identified

ARLINGTON, MA — After noticing that a 68-year-old woman had driven her car into the waters of Spy Pond in Arlington, three good samaritans risked their own safety to save the woman's life.

Arlington Police identified the good samaritans as David Frasier, 54, of Boxford, Cesar Perozo, 41, of Stoneham and Kenneth Chapman, 57, of Sydney Australia. The three men jumped in to save Helen Joyce, 68, of Medford after she accidentally drove her vehicle into the pond on Friday afternoon.

Joyce was cold, but otherwise unhurt, according to police. She will not face charges, however police will make an immediate notification triggering a review of Joyce's ability to drive safely.

"I commend the teamwork and courage of everyone involved in this incident, from the rescuers who fearlessly ran into the water to our officers and firefighters who executed the car removal today," Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said. "In a week filled with tragic news, and as our brother officers from Boston fight for their lives, this happy ending was more than welcome."

A video captured at the scene showed a man swimming out to save the woman who accidentally drove a vehicle into Spy Pond near Linden Street. The video shows the man attempting to save the woman while the vehicle sinks into the pond. A second man swims out to assist in the rescue before police and firefighters approach the scene.

The video shows the car sinking into the depths of the pond with a man frantically trying to free the woman from the vehicle. As the vehicle becomes completely submerged, the man yells, "I lost her!"

Seconds after view of the car was lost, the woman surfaced and was helped back to safety.
